Multiple Breaks Per Shift: Flexible Break Tracking for Real Workdays

4 min read16 April 2026

Summary

Real workdays don't always follow a single-break pattern. Staff might take a morning tea break, a lunch break, and an afternoon break. NestedClock now tracks each break separately, giving you accurate total break time.

How It Works

Staff can start and end breaks multiple times during a shift:

  1. Clock In at 9:00 AM
  2. Start Break at 10:30 AM → End Break at 10:45 AM (15 min)
  3. Start Break at 12:00 PM → End Break at 12:30 PM (30 min)
  4. Start Break at 3:00 PM → End Break at 3:15 PM (15 min)
  5. Clock Out at 5:00 PM

Total break time: 60 minutes across 3 breaks. Each break is recorded with its own start and end time.

Break Time Deductions

NestedClock caps break deductions at 30 minutes per day for payroll calculations. Even if a staff member takes 60 minutes of breaks, only 30 minutes is deducted from their paid hours. This aligns with common Australian award requirements.

Long Break Detection

The admin dashboard flags any individual break over 35 minutes. This helps managers identify patterns and address issues before they become problems. Breaks are colour-coded by severity — amber for 35-45 minutes, orange for 45-60, and red for over 60.

Rate Limiting

To prevent misuse, staff are limited to 5 breaks per day. If they reach the limit, they'll see a message asking them to contact their manager.
