Summary
Trust is the foundation of every great team — but when you're managing staff across multiple locations, a little verification goes a long way. That's why we've built GPS Location Tracking directly into NestedClock's clock-in system.
Why GPS Tracking Matters
For businesses with mobile workers, remote sites, or multiple shop locations, a common question is: "Was my staff actually at the shop when they clocked in?" GPS tracking answers that question instantly.
- Eliminate location fraud: Confirm staff are physically at the workplace when they clock in or out
- Accountability without micromanagement: The data is there if you need it, but it doesn't get in the way
- Multi-site visibility: See exactly which location each staff member clocked in from
- Break tracking: Know where staff go during breaks — are they still on-site?
How It Works
GPS tracking in NestedClock is designed to be seamless and non-intrusive:
- Enable per shop: Go to Manage → Shops and toggle "GPS Tracking" on for any shop
- Automatic capture: When staff clock in, clock out, start a break, or end a break, their GPS coordinates are captured automatically
- No extra steps: Staff don't need to do anything different — the browser handles it
- View in admin: Go to Alerts → GPS Logs to see all location data with Google Maps links
What Gets Tracked
Every clock action captures a separate GPS point, giving you a complete picture:
- Clock In location: Where the staff member started their shift
- Clock Out location: Where they ended their shift
- Break Start location: Where they were when they went on break
- Break End location: Where they were when they returned from break
Each location is clickable and opens directly in Google Maps, so you can see the exact spot on a map.
Privacy-First Design
We believe in transparency. Here's how we handle GPS data responsibly:
- Per-shop toggle: GPS is off by default. You choose which shops need it
- Browser permission: Staff must grant location permission — the browser asks them directly
- Graceful fallback: If GPS is unavailable or denied, the clock action still works — no one gets locked out
- No continuous tracking: We only capture location at the moment of a clock action, not continuously
The Admin GPS Logs Dashboard
The GPS Logs tab under Alerts gives you a clean, organised view of all location data:
- Last 14 days: See recent GPS data at a glance
- Filter by staff: Quickly find a specific team member's locations
- Colour-coded badges: Each action type (Clock In, Clock Out, Break Start, Break End) has its own badge
- One-click Google Maps: Click any badge to open the exact location in Google Maps
- Staff details: See the staff member's name, shop, date, and times alongside each GPS entry
Real-World Use Cases
Hospitality & Retail
Confirm that staff are clocking in from the actual shop, not from home or a nearby car park. Particularly useful for early morning or late night shifts where supervision may be limited.
Multi-Site Businesses
When staff work across multiple locations, GPS tracking confirms they're at the right site. Combined with NestedClock's cross-shop clocking feature, you get complete visibility.
Mobile & Field Workers
For businesses with staff who work at client sites or in the field, GPS tracking provides proof of attendance without requiring a fixed kiosk.
Works With Your Existing Setup
GPS tracking integrates seamlessly with NestedClock's other features:
- Photo Verification + GPS: Enable both for maximum accountability — photo first, then GPS capture
- Break Tracking + GPS: Track where staff go during breaks
- Cross-Shop Clocking + GPS: See which location staff actually clocked in from
Getting Started
Enabling GPS tracking takes 5 seconds:
- Go to Manage → Shops
- Find the shop you want to track
- Toggle GPS Tracking on
- That's it — next time staff clock in, their location will be captured
View the data anytime under Alerts → GPS Logs.
